Obituary

Craig William Wood of Harrisburg, an engineer, volunteer firefighter, Air Force veteran, and artist, sailed into the West to the Undying Lands on March 25, 2015. He shared his home and his life with his wife Tina, where he enjoyed working together on their garden, traveling to browse antique shops and making her laugh from the moment they first met.

Craig was born on April 13, 1951, in Buffalo, NY, to the late William and Fay Wood, and spent his youth in Grand Island, NY. There, he lived his childhood playing sandlot baseball, exploring and getting into mischief with his friends from dawn to dusk, and later became a volunteer firefighter for the Grand Island Fire Department.

He was a veteran of the Air Force where he was stationed in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, and leaves behind his closest friend and Air Force brother Lester Maddox. He was employed as an Industrial Engineer at True Temper Hardware for 20 years and later at Tyco Electronics for five years.

Craig was an artist who took up the craft of bonsai, built yard ponds, created and designed his own board games, and would spend hours hand-painting entire armies of fantasy miniatures and creatures. He was a voracious reader and history buff, and there was no topic he would not be interested in discussing or learning about. His favorite books were The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and he played Dungeons and Dragons with the same small circle of friends once a month for decades. Although Craig loved all sports and played softball and basketball as an adult, none gave him more joy than golf.

In passing, he has also left behind his brother Keith (Wende) Wood, and sisters Brooke (Rod) Raham, Darcey Golde, and Amy (Steve) Morgan, niece Jennifer (Tim) Cramer, nephews Christopher Golde, Gregory Golde, Abram Morgan, Aaron Wood, grandnephew Peyton Golde, and grandniece Madison Cramer, all of Grand Island, NY. He was stepfather to Mark (Melinda) Shimer of Baldwinsville, NY, and Kristyne (Tom) Rosier of Sinking Spring, PA. Craig was, above all, a beloved Grandpa who will be sorely missed by his seven grandchildren, Aslan, Berin, Soren, and Tegan Basol, and Nikita, Lila and Marley Rosier.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 7, at 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at Paxton Presbyterian Church, 3500 Sharon Street, Harrisburg. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full Military Honors. Neill Funeral Home, Harrisburg, will be handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758541, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
